    Family planning was one of the most important subject studied at the first general conference of the Arab Socialist Union's (ASU) feminist organisation which ended in the Egyptian capital, Cairo, on Tuesday (6 July).

    SYNOPSIS: Five hundred delegates representing 260,000 members of he organisation throughout Egypt attended the three-day conference which was held at ASU headquarters. The government strongly supported the concept of the conference and encouraged prominent women from all walks of life to take part. One of those foremost with encouragement for the emerging role of Arab women was ASU First Secretary, Dr. Mustafa Khalil, who addressed the opening session.

    The conference was inaugurated by Mrs. Jihan Sadat, wife of Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. In her opening address she outlined the aims of he conference and stressed the need for co-operation and study by all women to enable them to assist in the continued development of Egypt. Later the conference broke up into six committees to study family planing, rural women, career women, family welfare and education and training in detail.
