Background: The Egyptian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Riad arrived in Kuwait on Thursday (6 Jan) for three days of talks with Kuwaiti leaders. He was met at the airport by Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Shaikh Subah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber. This is official film of the two Foreign Ministers together from the Kuwait Ministry of Information.
Mr. Riad's talks with Kuwaiti leaders were expected to cover a wild field, including the situation in the Gulf following Iran's occupation of three islands late last year. Mr. Riad recently talked in Cairo to the Iranian Ambassador about this situation.
SYNOPSIS: Soon after his arrival, Mr. Riad attacked the United States for supplying more aircraft and weapons to Israel, at a time, he said, when the U.S. admitted Israel had air superiority. Mr. Riad also denounced the U.S. claim to mediation in the Middle East. This claim, he said was 'a kind of political charlatanism'. The U.S. announced recently that it had decided in principle to resume shipping Phantom fighter-bombers to Israel.
During his three days in Kuwait, Mr. Riad had talks at the Foreign Office with Shaikh Subah, and sessions with the Amir of Kuwait, and the Crown Prince -cum-Prime Minister Shaikh Jaber Al Ahmad Al-Jaber. The situation in the Gulf was expected to be important in the discussions. Mr. Riad recently had a meeting in Cairo with the Iranian Ambassador, to discuss Iran's occupation of three Gulf islands.
Mr. Riad is on a tour of the Gulf which will precede a visit to the People's Republic of China.
