THE QUEEN MOTHER, VISITING NORMANDY AND BRITANNY IN FRANCE ON A TWO-DAY PRIVATE TOUR, TODAY SAW THE NORMANDY BEACHES WHERE BRITISH AND ALLIED FORCES LANDED IN 1944 TO FIGHT THE GERMANS, AND THE BAYEUX TAPESTRY, DEPICTING THE NORMAN INVASION OF ENGLAND IN 1066.

    QUEEN ELIZABETH ARRIVED IN FRANCE EARLIER TODAY ABOARD THE ROYAL YACHT 'BRITANNIA'. LANDING AT CHERBOURG, SHE TRAVELLED TO ARROMANCHES, WHERE SHE TOURED THE SECOND WORLD WAR MUSEUM. HERE SHE SAW RELICS OF THE 1944 D-DAY LANDING AND ALSO TOURED THE REMAINS OF THE MULBERRY PORT, CONSTRUCTED OFF THE BEACHES TO SUPPORT THE BRITISH ADVANCE.

    AFTER LUNCHING WITH THE EDITORIAL BOARD CHAIRMAN OF THE FRENCH NEWSPAPER 'LE FIGARO', M. JACQUES DE LA CRETELLE, THE QUEEN MOTHER VISITED THE BAYEUX TAPESTRY WORKS WHERE SHE SAW THE 200-FEET-LONG TAPESTRY, WOVEN BY QUEEN MATHILDA, WIFE OF WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR. THE MAYOR OF BAYEUX WELCOMED HER AND PRESENTED HER WITH THE GRAND BRONZE MEDAL OF THE CITY.

    LATER, SHE VISITED THE BAYEUX LACE-MAKING SCHOOL, WHERE SHE SAW YOUNG GIRLS LEARNING THE TRADITIONAL CRAFT. SHE ALSO PAID TRIBUTE TO SOME 6,000 BRITISH AND 500 GERMAN SOLDIERS AS SHE LAID A WREATH AT THE BRITISH MILITARY CEMETERY.

    TOMORROW, SHE IS EXPECTED TO VISIT THE BRITANNY PORT OF ST. MALO, AND THE ISLAND ABBEY OF MONT SAINT MICHEL.
