  • Description

The World Boxing Association (WBA) junior middleweight champion, Japan's Masashi Kudo, retained his title in Osaka on Wednesday (13 December) when he won a points decision over Joo Ho of South Korea.

SYNOPSIS: Kudo, in the red trunks and with his back to the camera, was defending his junior middleweight title for the first time. The 27-year-old champion started cautiously and for the first half of the bout it looked as if Ho was getting the better of the fight, if only marginally. The bout was interrupted by frequently clinches and Ho, a former Orient and Pacific junior middleweight champion, showed little of his previous form. Fight fans waited in vain for his famous right uppercut.

Round twelve, and Kudo gained the edge, picking up points with right jabs to the head of Ho while giving the challenger no target. The decision was a split one. Referee Paul Field of the United States scoring the fight Kudo's way, 148 to 144 points. The Japanese judge also gave it to Kudo by 149 to 144. The Korean judge was the odd man out: he scored Ho the winner by 148 to 145.
