PRESIDENT NGUYEN VAN THIEU URGED 200 REPRESENTATIVES OF SOUTH VIETNAMESE POLITICAL PARTIES TO FORM THEMSELVES INTO TWO MAIN GROUPS -- ONE FOR THE GOVERNMENT AND ONE AGAINST - WHEN HE MET THEM ON SATURDAY.

THE PRESIDENT MET THE LEADERS FOR TWO HOURS AT THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE. HE SAID THE PRESENT PARTIES HAD WELL-MEANING POLICIES AIMED AT CREATING A NEW SOCIETY AND A STRONG COUNTRY.

HE SAID THEIR PROGRAMMES WOULD BE MORE SUCCESSFUL IF THERE WERE FEWER BUT MORE POWERFUL PARTIES.

SOUTH VIETNAM AT PRESENT HAS SCORES OF POLITICAL PARTIES. REPRESENTATIVES OF SOME OF THE BIGGEST, INCLUDING THE NATIONAL SALVATION FRONT, DEMOCRATIC FREEDOM FORCE AND THE VIETNAM FARMERS AND WORKER'S ASSOCIATION -- ALL FORMED SINCE THE VIET CONG TET OFFENSIVE IN FEBRUARY -- ATTENDED THE MEETING.

THE PRESIDENT REJECTED RUMOURS THAT LEADERSHIP IN SOUTH VIETNAM WAS DIVIDED INTO TWO GROUPS -- ONE LED BY HIMSELF AND THE OTHER BY VICE-PRESIDENT NGUYEN CAO KY.

IN ANSWER TO A QUESTION, PRESIDENT THIEU SAID HE DID NOT THINK THE UNITED STATES WAS GOING TO ABANDON SOUTH VIETNAM OR "SHAKE HANDS WITH THE COMMUNISTS". BUT EVEN IF IT DID SO, HE ADDED, THE DESTINY OF SOUTH VIETNAM WOULD STILL BE DECIDED BY THE VIETNAMESE PEOPLE.
