A sport which is attracting increasing attention in the United States is professional tennis...and one of the newest entries is amateur champion Rod Laver.
The 24-year-old Australian is currently travelling with a troupe of professionals in a fifty-match round robin called the world's series of professional tennis. At stake are prizes totalling 112-thousand, 500 dollars...with 35-thousand going to the winner of the round robin and 25-thousand to the runner-up.
Such champions as Australia's Lew Hoad and Ken Rosewall, America's Earl Buchholz junior and Barry MacKay; Chile's Luis Ayala and Spain's Andres Gimeno are participating.
In more than a score of matches since the series began, Laver has been taking an unmerciful beating at the hands of the professional. But this is normal for an amateur starting out among the world's finest players. At Madison Square Garden on Sunday (11 February) Laver lost to Rosewall by a respectable 11-to-9 games. The professionals play eight-game sets instead of the six played by amateurs.
The series is promoted by the International Professional Tennis Players.
