  • Description

Thousands of Greek Cypriots demonstrated in the major towns of Cyprus on Monday (8 November). The demonstration against the continued presence of Turkish troops on the island, coincided with a United Nations debate on the future of Cyprus.

SYNOPSIS: During the morning, students left their classes and gathered to take part in a rally. They were protesting against a lack of progress in enforcing previous United Nations resolutions calling for the withdrawal of Turkish troops from the northern part of Cyprus. They also want refugees from the 1974 invasion returned to their homes. The northern 36 percent of Cyprus has been occupied by Turkish troops since the invasion. The students carried banners calling for a just solution by the U.N.

At the Greek Embassy, and later at the Soviet Union Embassy, the students presented a petition asking for support from the U.N. general Assembly.

Later, another large crowd of five thousand demonstrated in Eleftheria Square in Nicosia. All shops, offices and factories in the Greek-held parts of the island had closed early to ensure a mass turn-out at the rally.

The demonstrators were addressed by the Mayor of Nicosia, Mr. Lellos Demetriades. The co-ordinating committee of parties and other organisations who arranged the rally had invited Greek Cypriots to take part. They said by doing so it would help in the struggle for an independent, integrated, non-aligned and fully de-militarised Cyprus.
