    THE ALL AFRICAN CONFERENCE OF CHURCHES OPENED ITS SECOND ASSEMBLY AT ABIDJAN, IVORY COAST, ON TUESDAY.

    THE OPENING CEREMONY TOOK PLACE AT THE PARTY HOUSE. HOSTS FOR THE OCCASION WERE THE METHODIST CHURCH OF THE IVORY COAST.

    SIXTY-FIVE CHURCHES FROM 28 AFRICAN COUNTRIES HAVE SENT DELEGATES TO THE ASSEMBLY. OFFICIALS OF THE ECUMENICAL COUNCIL OF CHURCHES AND OBSERVERS FROM NON-MEMBER CHURCHES ARE ATTENDING. ONE OF THE OBSERVERS IS BISHOP GERMOGEIN FROM SOVIET RUSSIA, REPRESENTING THE PATRIARCH OF MOSCOW AND ALL RUSSIA.

    THE THEME FOR THE GATHERING IS: "WITH CHRIST AT WORK IN AFRICA TODAY".

    AT TUESDAY'S CEREMONY, THE CHURCHMEN AND OBSERVERS WERE JOINED BY THE BRITISH, UNITED STATES, ISRAEL AND ETHIOPIAN AMBASSADORS TO THE IVORY COAST, AND MEMBERS OF THE IVORY COAST GOVERNMENT.

    THE ASSEMBLY OPENED ON TUESDAY WITH A SHORT ADDRESS BY PASTOR ANDRIAMANJATO, MAYOR OF TANANARIVE. THE REVEREND SAMSON NAN NANDJUI, CHAIRMAN OF THE METHODIST CHURCH IN THE IVORY COAST, GAVE THE MAIN SPEECH OF THE CEREMONY. HE SAID THAT THE CONFERENCE, WITH ITS INTERNATIONAL SIGNIFICANCE AND ECUMENICAL CHARACTER, WAS 'A TURNING POINT IN THE HISTORY OF THE CHRISTIAN CHURCHES IN AFRICA'.

    IT WAS REPORTED YESTERDAY (3 SEPTEMBER) THAT THE ASSEMBLY HAS ADMITTED EIGHT NEW MEMBERS TO THE CONFERENCE OF CHURCHES. TWENTY-THREE CHURCHES WERE ORIGINALLY PUT FORWARD FOR APPROVAL.
