  • Description

General Ayub Khan, President of Pakistan, had a "little summit" meeting with India's Prime Minister Nehru when he stopped briefly at Palam Airport, New Delhi, September 1, on his way from West to East Pakistan.

The meeting, held in a friendly atmosphere and at General Ayub's suggestion, raised hopes of a new era of better relations between the two countries.

Afterwards General Ayub spoke of the need for agreement - invasions had come to the Indian continent in the past because of internal disagreements. The recent reports of Chinese incursions into India, and General Ayub's reference to Russian road building operations in Afghanistan, gave special significance to his statement.

The two leaders decided that there should be an immediate high-level conference to seek means of stopping shooting incidents on India's eastern border with Pakistan, and their friendly meeting may eventually help to provide a solution to the crucial Kashmir problem.

It was General Ayub's first meeting with Mr. Nehru since becoming President of Pakistan.
