  • Description

MEMBERS OF THE ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS OF THE METROPOLITAN OPERA COMPANY IN NEW YORK STAGED A MASS PROTEST ON MONDAY (15 SEPTEMBER) AT THE DOOR OF THE OPERA HOUSE IN LINCOLN CENTRE PLAZA. THE DISPUTING MUSICIANS PLAYED AND SANG THE TRIUMPHAL MARCH FROM "AIDA" BEFORE AND AUDIENCE OF SIDEWALK SPECTATORS.

INSTEAD OF ANCIENT EGYPTIAN ARMY BANNERS, HOWEVER, THE METROPOLITAN MUSICIANS CARRIED PROTEST BANNERS ACCUSING METROPOLITAN OPERA HOUSE DIRECTOR RUDOLF BING OF LOCKING THEM OUT.

ACCORDING TO THEIR UNION, THE MUSICIANS HAD PROMISED TO PERFORM "AIDA" AT THE SCHEDULED SEASON OPENING ON MONDAY NIGHT, DESPITE AN IMPASSE OVER PAY INCREASES AND WORKING CONDITIONS. THE DISPUTE HAS LED TO A BREAKOFF OF CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS.

THE MUSICIANS CLAIMED THAT MR BING'S REACTION WAS TO LOCK THEM OUT. SO THERE WAS NO OPENING, BUT THERE WAS THE PROTEST PERFORMANCE OF THE TRIUMPHAL MARCH IN THE PLAZA ON MONDAY AFTERNOON.

IT WILL NOW REPORTEDLY BE AT LEAST UNTIL MID-OCTOBER BEFORE THE METROPOLITAN OPERA SEASON GETS UNDER WAY -- EVEN IF THE DISPUTE BETWEEN THE MANAGEMENT AND THE MUSICIANS WERE SETTLED IMMEDIATELY.
