    DIPLOMATIC STAFF FROM THE SYRIAN EMBASSY YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) LEFT TUNIS BY AIR FOLLOWING TUNISIA'S SERVERANCE OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS WITH SYRIA LAST TUESDAY (MAY 7).

    ON WEDNESDAY (MAY 8) THE SYRIAN DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER, DR. IBRAHIM MAKHOUS, MADE THE FIRST OFFICIAL COMMENT ON TUNISIA'S DECISION. DR. MAKHOUS SAID THE TUNISIAN GOVERNMENT WAS STRENGTHENING ITS RELATIONS WITH WEST GERMANY AND the UNITED STATES AT A TIME WHEN THE ARAB NATION NEEDED TO CONSOLIDATE ITS EFFORTS TO CONFRONT THE COMMON ENEMY. HE ADDED THAT TUNISIA HAD BROKEN RELATIONS WITH A BROTHERLY ARAB PEOPLE WHICH OPENED ITS ARMS TO IT.

    DR. MAKHOUS ALSO SAID THAT SYRIA HAD NOT SO FAR DECIDED ON THE COUNTRY WHICH WOULD LOOK AFTER ITS INTERESTS IN TUNISIA.
