  • Description

Brush fires described as the worst in 50 years whipped over the hills behind Oakland, California on Tuesday (September 22). About 50 homes were destroyed and more were threatened by the quickly-spreading blazes.

Hundreds of people fled their homes as the fire burned out of control. Flames were said to be 200 feet (60 metres) high and driven along by strong winds.

The fire started in the bone-dry grass of the hills behind the University of California at Berkeley. Firemen managed to bring the major part of the flames under control after three hours. Aerial tankers were brought in to bomb the blaze with chemicals.

No one was killed and only minor injuries were reported. The cause of the fire was not known.
