  • Description

ICELAND CHANGES OVER TO RIGHT-HAND TRAFFIC NEXT SUNDAY (MAY 26) TWENTY-SEVEN YEARS AFTER THE BILL APPROVING THE SWITCH WAS APPROVED IN PARLIAMENT.

THE TOTAL COST OF THE ICELANDIC EXCHEQUER WILL BE IN THE REGION OF GBP410,000 STERLING.

THE DEGREE OF DIFFERENCE THE CHANGE WILL MAKE IS QUESTIONABLE SINCE ICELAND HAS ONLY ON PAVED RURAL ROAD -- FROM THE CAPITAL CITY REYKJAVIK TO THE AMERICAN BASE AT KEFLAVIK. ROADS OUTSIDE THE CAPITAL ARE JUST GRAVEL OR TOTALLY UNMADE. FEW ROADS ARE WIDE ENOUGH FOR TWO CARS TO PASS.

THE CHANGEOVER WILL AFFECT THE TOTAL POPULATION OF 180,000 AND THE COUNTRY'S 43,000 VEHICLES, OF WHICH 36,000 ARE PRIVATE CARS AND THE REST BUSES AND TRUCKS. THE TIMING OF THE CHANGE IS BASED MAINLY ON THE FACT THAT THE COUNTRY IS ON THE VERGE OF A GIGANTIC HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION PROGRAMME AND THE LONGER THE DELAY THE HIGHER THE COST.

THE ACTUAL START OF THE NEW SYSTEM IS AT 0600 HOURS ON SUNDAY MORNING, WHEN NEW ROAD SIGNS AND TRAFFIC LIGHT WILL COME INTO USE. ABOUT 1,000 VOLUNTARY TRAFFIC WARDENS WILL ASSIST THE POLICE ON SUNDAY AND A PUBLICITY CAMPAIGN HAS BEEN MOUNTED TO INFORM THE PUBLIC OF DETAILS.
