    THE DEATH OF A STUDENT, SAID TO HAVE BEEN KILLED IN CLASHES LAST MONDAY, SET OFF YESTERDAY'S BATTLES IN SEOUL.STUDENTS RAMPAGED THROUGH THE CITY IN THE FOURTH SUCCESSIVE DAY OF RIOTING.TROOPS WERE CALLED OUT TO REINFORCE RIOT POLICE WHO WERE TRYING TO DISPERSE 5,000 STONE-THROWING STUDENTS WITH BATON CHARGES AND TEAR-GAS BOMBS.

    THE GOVERNMENT INSTRUCTED SEOUL UNIVERSITIES AND SCHOOLS TO CLOSE IF NECESSARY IN AN ATTEMPT TO RESTORE ORDER.POLICE ARRESTED 392 STUDENTS AND SAID FIFTY-FOUR POLICEMEN WERE INJURED.

    MONDAY IS THE ANNIVERSARY OF THE 1960 STUDENT UPRISING WHICH OVERTHREW PRESIDENT SYNGMAN RHEE AFTER TWELVE YEARS IN OFFICE.OUTDOOR CELEBRATIONS OF THE EVENT IN SEOUL HAVE ALREADY BEEN CANCELLED AND REPLACED BY AN INDOOR CEREMONY.

    JAPAN AND SOUTH KOREA RECENTLY SIGNED AGREEMENTS IN TOKYO ON THE LAST REMAINING POST-WAR ISSUES HINDERING A NORMALISATION OF RELATIONS BETWEEN THEIR COUNTRIES.
