The debates of the Bishops will last for a month, and among the pressing problems are the large-scale defections of them priesthood, and the attitude of the Church towards injustice in the world.

SYNOPSIS: The World Synod of bishops opened in the Vatican City on Thursday, in a brand new Synod Hall designed by Italian architect Pier Luigi Nervi. The Synod of 214 bishops opened in a climate of greater open-ness than has been previously knows, following careful preparation of the two major themes for debate over the next month - the crisis among the clergy, and the attitude of the Catholic Church to injustice in the world.

The crisis in the Priesthood is perhaps the most immediate problem, since an estimated 22 to 25 thousand priests have defected in the past seven years. Study of the topic began with a report on the "Doctrinal Aspects of the Priesthood' from Cardinal Joseph Hoeffner, Arch-Bishop of Cologne, West Germany.

The Pope's presence at the sessions, with Hungarian Cardinal Joseph Mindszenty at his side, is a response to the wishes of the Bishops, who see it as a symbol of shared responsibility in the Government of the Catholic Church. 79 year old Cardinal Mindszenty arrived in Rome Just before the opening of the Synod, after remaining in exile at the U.S. embassy in Budapest since the Budapest Uprising of 1957.
