  • Description

The 25th International stoke Mandeville Games for the Paralysed began in England on Sunday (24 July) and they were officially opened by Prince Charles.

SYNOPSIS: More than 650 athletes from 35 countries are taking part in this year's contest and they gave Prince Charles a warm welcome as he arrived at the stadium.

After the official opening ceremony, Prince Charles chatted with some of the competitors. He then took time out to watch a game of indoor bowls, which is one of the 12 sports being contested in the week-long games.

Another popular event is the wheelchair race and on Sunday competitors from Israel, South Africa, Korea, Italy, France, Spain and Denmark had a practice run.

There are several field events...including the throwing of the javelin.

One of the Australian team members....his team presented Prince Charles with an axe....similar to the ones used in tree-felling competitions in Australia.

When the games began 25 years ago, they were attended only by athletes from two countries...Britain and the Netherlands. They're not only intended as an outlet for those who compete , but also as an inspiration to thousands of others around the world who have been stricken by paralysis.
