  • Description

THE U.S. PLAN TO LAND AN UNMANNED SURVEYOR VEHICLE ON THE MOON NEXT YEAR HAS SUFFERED A SEVERE SETBACK WITH THE FAILURE OF AN ATLAS-CENTAUR ROCKET TO PASS A CRITICAL LAUNCH TEST TUESDAY (30 JUNE).

THE ROCKET, WHICH HAS BEEN PLAGUED BY TROUBLES FOR MORE THAN THREE YEARS, FAILED WHEN ITS HIGH ENERGY CENTAUR UPPER STAGE, SCHEDULED TO SOAR INTO ORBIT TO PROVE ITS ABILITY IN MOON MISSIONS, PLUNGED INSTEAD TO A FIERY DEATH OVER THE SOUTH ATLANTIC OFF THE COAST OF AFRICA.

SCIENTISTS SAID THAT AFTER A PERFECT TAKE-OFF, THE TWO HYDROGEN-FUELED ENGINES ON THE EXPERIMENTAL ROCKET SHUT DOWN TWO MINUTES EARLY AND THE UPPER STAGE WHICH CARRIED NO PAYLOAD, FAILED TO REACH THE SPEED NEEDED TO SEND IT INTO ORBIT.
