    THOUSANDS LINED THE STREETS TO WATCH THE FUNERAL PROCESSION AND DR. VERWOERD WAS THEN BURIED AT A PRIVATE SERVICE ATTENDED ONLY BY HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS.

    THE FUNERAL BEGAN WITH A SERVICE IN AN OPEN-AIR AMPHITHEATRE. THEN THE COFFIN WAS CARRIED ON A GUN-CARRIAGE THROUGH THE STREETS OF PRETORIA. THOUSANDS LINED THE ROUTE, MANY OPENLY WEEPING AS THE COFFIN PASSED BY. IN PRETORIA'S CHURCH SQUARE THE PROCESSION STOPPED BRIEFLY.

    A NINETEEN-GUN SALUTE WAS SOUNDED FOR THE MAN WHO LED SOUTH AFRICA FOR THE LAST EIGHT YEARS. DURING THE SERVICE, THE CROWDS HEARD IT STRESSED OVER THE LOUDSPEAKERS THAT SOUTH AFRICA WOULD FACE THE FUTURE WITH THE SAME DETERMINATION THAT WAS THE GUIDING PRINCIPAL OF DOCTOR VERWOERD.

    HE WAS BURIED IN THE HEROES' CORNER OF THE OLD CEMETERY IN PRETORIA. HE LIES BESIDE FORMER PRIME MINISTERS OF SOUTH AFRICA AND THE PIONEERS WHO HELPED OPEN UP THE COUNTRY FOR WHITE SETTLERS.

    THE BURIAL SERVICE WAS PRIVATE, ATTENDED BY HIS WIDOW, RELATIVES AND CLOSE FRIENDS.

    AMONG THOSE WHO ATTENDED THE FUNERAL WERE MINISTERS, DIPLOMATIC REPRESENTATIVES INCLUDING THE BRITISH AMBASSADOR, AND MR. IAN SMITH WHO FLEW IN FROM RHODESIA AS A PRIVATE VISITOR.

    ON SUNDAY, LEADERS OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN NATIONALIST PARTY WHO ATTENDED THE FUNERAL LEFT PRETORIA FOR CAPE TOWN WHERE THEY WILL MEET ON TUESDAY TO DISCUSS THE CHOICE OF A NEW PRIME MINISTER.
