  • Description

The mass exodus from the former imperial city of Hue continued today, with an estimated 200,000 refugees still trying to make their way to the coast.

On Sunday (23 March) North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces attacked and destroyed a vital bridge along Highway One, blocking a huge convoy of refugees fleeing from Hue, some 620 miles (1,040 kms) north of Saigon.

The bridge was totally destroyed, but some refugees still managed to cross the river cutting across Highway One. The abandoned their belongings and transportation, trying to finish the remainder of their journey on foot.

Behind them, stranded on Highway One, were thousands of trucks and military vehicles. All of them were loaded with refugees and their belongings.

The refugees were all trying to make the journey from Hue to the coastal city of Danang, until Communist forces destroyed the bridge, 40 miles (70 kms) outside of Danang.

By late afternoon, most of the families have resigned themselves to spend another night on Highway One. they cooked and ate their food, waiting for government relief to come their way.
