  • Description

By the weekend, Turkey had virtually completed its takeover of United States bases, sending troops to seal off the bases and officers to take over command of some 26 American installations -- including some of the most important radar and monitoring sites.

The Turkish reprisal swiftly followed the refusal of the U.S. Congress to lift its embargo on arms sales to Turkey.

From the main intelligence bases, including Karamursel - filmed in this coverage -- the Americans had previously been able to listen in on Soviet naval and air radio traffic, and keep a round-the-clock watch on Soviet nuclear missile silos.

There are still 7,000 U.S. servicemen in Turkey, but they're not being allowed to undertake any intelligence gathering operations.

The full impact of the takeover on the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and on American security is still not known, but some of the intelligence data lost is reported to be irreplaceable.

Turkish officials have said they will now look to western Europe, particularly Britain, France and West Germany, for defence cooperation because they feel they can no longer rely on the U.S.
