  • Description

The French ketch Penduick VI limped into Rio de Janeiro harbour late on Sunday night (14 October) after snapping its main mast in the Round-the World Yacht race about two weeks ago.

A Rio Yacht Club spokesman said the ketch, which had been in the lead arrived under a mizzen staysail and jury rigging.

A new mast flown in from Europe was being fitted, and the French crew hoped to be under way for Cape town by Tuesday (16 October).

Under race rules, skipper Eric Tabarly must accept disqualification once he takes help from ashore. He reportedly told a radio amateur that he would accept disqualification on the first leg of the race, from England to Cape Town, and head for either Cape Town or Sydney to compete in later stages.

The incident has placed the British yacht Adventure in the lead, followed by the Italian entry C.S.E.R.B., and the French yachts Kriter and Grand Louis.

SYNOPSIS: One of the world's great harbours -- Rio De Janeiro -- where one boat in the Round-the-World Yacht race has made an unscheduled stop on the first leg of the event, from England to Cape Town.

The French ketch, Penduick VI, which was leading the field, limped into Rio on Sunday night after snapping its main mast in the Atlantic two weeks ago. The yacht arrived in darkness under a mizzen staysail and jury rigging.

A new mast was flown in from Europe for Penduick VI -- but under race rules, skipper Eric Tabarly faces disqualification for taking help from ashore.

Tabarly reportedly told a radio amateur he would accept disqualification on the first leg and head for Cape Town or Sydney to compete in the later stages. Penduick's setback placed the British naval yacht, Adventure, in the lead.
