  • Description

Despite the military stand-off between Israel and her Arab neighbours, the traditional Christmas celebrations in the Holy Land were well attended on Christmas Day (25 December 1973).

An estimated 20,000 Christians participated in celebrations at Bethlehem and Nazareth. Security forces patrolled the streets but they were less evident than in recent years. There were no incidents.

SYNOPSIS: Only about a thousand worshippers were able to attend one of the most important services -- midnight mass at the Roman Catholic Church of St. Catherine next to the Basilica of the Nativity. Another five thousand watched from outside on closed circuit television.
