  • Description

TWO AUSTRIANS -- ERWIN THALER AND ADOLF KOXEDER -- WERE TODAY (SUNDAY) DECLARED THIS YEAR'S EUROPEAN TWO-MAN BOBSLEIGH CHAMPIONS AFTER THE SECOND DAY'S RUNS IN THE MEETING AT GARMISCH PARTENKIRCHEN WERE CANCELLED BECAUSE WARMER WEATHER HAD MADE THE TRACK UNUSABLE. THE TEAM RECORDED THE FASTEST TIME OVER THE COURSE DURING THE FIRST HEAT ON SATURDAY.

THE AUSTRIANS' TIME OVER THE COURSE WAS 2 MINUTES 36.89 SECONDS. IN THE FIRST HEAT THEY BEAT ANOTHER AUSTRIAN TEAM -- MANFRED HOFER AND KARL PICHLER -- WHO HAVE BEEN PLACED SECOND IN THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP.

COMPETITORS FROM BRITAIN, WEST GERMANY, AUSTRIA, ITALY, SWITZERLAND, CZECHOSLOVAKIA, RUMANIA AND SWEDEN WERE ENTERED IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP.

PRINCE MICHAEL OF KENT WAS A MEMBER OF ONE OF THE BRITISH BOBSLEIGH TAKING PART. HIS PARTNER WAS RORY COCHRANE-DYET.

THE CANCELLATION OF THE SECOND DAY'S RUNS SMASHED THE HOPES OF THE BRITISH TEAM, TONY NASH AND ROBIN DIXON, OF ADDING THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIP TO THEIR OLYMPIC AND WORLD TITLES. DURING THE FIRST DAY'S RUN THEY HAD THE MISFORTUNE TO BE DRAWN FIRST -- A DISADVANTAGE BECAUSE THE TRACK IS NOT YET WORN DOWN TO ITS SLIPPERY CORE.

THE ITALIANS ARE ALSO DISAPPOINTED ABOUT THE CANCELLATION. THEIR TEAM OF ROBERT ZARDINI AND CARLO DIMAI WAS CONSIDERED TO HAVE A VERY GOOD CHANCE IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP -- BUT THEY WERE ABLE TO FINISH ONLY 13TH ON THE FIRST DAY.
