  • Description

PORTUGUESE SOCIALISTS AND COMMUNISTS FOUGHT A BITTER VERBAL WAR TONIGHT AS THE RULING ARMED FORCES MOVEMENT QUIETLY PRESSED AHEAD WITH ITS PLANS FOR A WORKER SODIER STATE WHICH WOULD BYPASS THE MULTI-PARTY SYSTEM.

SOCIALIST LEADER MARIO SOARES,WHO HAS PULLED HIS PARTY - PORTUGAL'S LARGEST - OUT OF THE PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT IN PROTEST AGAINST AN 'INSULT' BY THE ARMED FORCES, TOLD A CROWDED PRESS CONFERENCE "WE ARE NOT MARCHING TOWARDS SOCIALISM BUT TOWARD A SORT OF STATE CAPITALISM WHICH BEGINS TO SPROUT INTO A POLICE TYPE REGIME AND THE CREATION OF A NEW CLASS OF BUREAUCRATS WHO OPPRESS THE WORKERS"
IN A CLEAR REFERENCE TO THE COMMUNISTS AND THEIR ALLIES, HE CHALLENGED THE ARMED FORCES MOVEMENT TO SAY WHETHER IT COULD CLAIM TO GOVERN PORTUGAL WITH THE SUPPORT OF MINORITY PARTIES WHO REPRESENTATED AT MOST 18 PERCENT OF THE PEOPLE.

DR SOARES WAS REFERRING TO THE FACT THAT HIS PARTY WON 38 PERCENT OF THE VOTES IN APRIL'S ELECTIONS FOR A CONSTITUENT ASSEMBLY, THE CENTRE-LEFT POPULAR DEMOCRATS (PPD) 26 PERCENT AND THE COMMUNISTS ONLY 12 PERCENT.)
TONIGHT THE PRD WHO, LIKE THE SOCIALISTS WERE GIVEN TWO CABINET POSTS IN THE PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT, WERE STILL PONDERING WHETHER TO FOLLOW THE SOCIALISTS OUT.

A PARTY DELEGATION SAW PRESIDENT FRANCISCO DA COSTA GOMESAT AT HIS PALACE EARLIER IN THE DAY.

THE TWO MAJOR PARTIES HAVE BOTH ATTACKED THE ARMED FORCES MOVEMENT'S PLAN FOR A PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC-UNDER MILITARY CONTROL AS ANTI DEMOCRATIC.

THE COMMUNIST PARTY OF DR ALVARO CUNHAL, A CABINET MINISTER WITHOUT PORTFOLIO, BACKS THE ARMED FORCES PLAN.

IN A TOUGH STATEMENT THE RULING POLITICAL COMMITTEE ACCUSED THE SOCIALISTS OF DESERTING THE LEFTWING UNION AND OF TRYING TO FORCE A RIGHTWING GOVERNMENT

AT A PACKED AND STIFLING NEWS CONFERENCE TONIGHT DR SOARES TOLD AN AUDIENCE INCLUDING MANY FOREIGN JOURNALISTS: + WE ARE A REVOLUTIONARY PARTY,BUT WE BELIEVE IN BUILDING A MORALIST AND PLURALIST SOCIALISM.

+WE WANT RESPECT FOR UNIVERSAL SUFFRAGE THROUGH FREE ELECTIONS AND NOT JUST A SHOW OF HANDS.

+WE WANT FREEDOM FOR THE NEWS MEDIA TO ENGLISH PUBLIC OPINION ABOUT OUR PROBLEMS+
AND DR SOARES APPEALED TO THE ARMED FORCES MOVEMENT TO RESPECT THEIR PROMISES. HE SAID THEY WERE THINKING OF A SORT OF PARALLEL POWER WHICH WAS IN NO WAY DEMOCRATIC, BUT THE FUNDAMENTAL QUESTION NOW WAS WHETHER THE MILITARY WANTED TO GOVERN WITH MINORITY PARTIES REPRESENTING AT MOST 18 PERCENT OF THE PEOPLE.
