  • Description

Brought ashore from the liner Himalaya at Colombo Oct 10, Leslie Stephen Bradley, 33, Hungarian-born naturalised Australian, appeared before Colombo magistrates Oct 11 and was remanded until Oct 18 for questioning by Australian police in connexion with the kidnapping July 7 this year in Sydney of eight-year old Graeme Thorne. The boy's parents had earlier won GBP80,000 in a state lottery. Later the boy was found murdered.

Bradley arrived at the court in a police car. He had a suitcase with him and walked into the court with a police escort. Present at the hearing was Australian High Commissioner in Colombo J.C.Kevin.

Australian detectives were arriving in Colombo this week to apply to the court for an extradition warrant on Bradley. After the first hearing, Bradley was taken to the remand jail.

The boy's kidnapping set off one of the biggest manhunts in Australian history. The kidnapper demanded GBP20,000 ransom but failed to contact the boy's parents though they had said they were ready to pay it. The following month, children found the boy's body in a shallow grave near Sydney.
