  • Description

Glasgow Rangers, only survivors of four British Isles teams in this year's European Association Football Cup, beat Sparta (Rotterdam), the Dutch champions, by three goals to two in their first leg quarter-final floodlit match in Rotterdam, Holland, March 9.

Watched by a crowd of 52,000, Rangers led 2-1 at half time. When centre-forward Max Murray made it 3-1 Rangers seemed to slow down. This was almost their undoing. In the last minute of the game, Piet De Vries, Sparta inside left, snapped on to a pass and netted with a full blooded drive.

Scorers: Dave Wilson; Sammy Baird and Max Murray for Rangers, and two goals by Piet De Vries for Sparta.

Second leg of the quarter final tie will be played at Ibrox, Glasgow, Scotland, March 16, after which the winners on aggregate will be paired against either Frankfurt Eintract (Germany) or Wiener Sportklub (Austria) in the semi-final. The other semi-final is between the two fabulous Spanish teams - Real Madrid and Barcelona.

The European Cup committee have decided that the final will be played in Glasgow on May 18.
