  • Description

As South Vietnamese ground units continued to press northwards along Highway 13 Monday, Saigon sources were predicting the early relief of the provincial capital of An Loc, 56 miles (90 kms) north of Saigon.

The advance of the South Vietnamese troops was accompanied by heavy American bombing of North Vietnamese forces around the besieged provincial capital.

But two regiments of the North Vietnamese Ninth division still blocked Highway 13 - the only land link between Saigon and an Loc, at a point between Lai Khe and An Loc.

SYNOPSIS: While both North and South Vietnamese claim to be in command of the South Vietnamese provincial capital of An Loc, 56 miles north of Saigon, South Vietnamese troops continue their drive to clear the only land link between the two important cities - Highway 13. The South Vietnamese have been making progress against tough resistance from the Communists opposing them, and Saigon sources are claiming that the vital Highway will be cleared shortly.

As the South Vietnamese land forces pushed forward helicopters and fighter aircraft were attacking the North Vietnamese in positions around An Loc....
The North Vietnamese are known to have two regiments of their Ninth Division blocking Highway 13 between Lai Khe and An Loc. At Lai Khe the South Vietnamese have established a command post for directing operations in the battle to get through to An Loc.

The battle for the Highway is important for the South Vietnamese if their capital, Saigon, is not to be in serious danger from entrenched North Vietnamese forces. In about a month;s time the monsoon will make fresh conquest of the region much more difficult. Meanwhile a new and more dangerous North Vietnamese offensive was being forecast further north, against the Central Highlands and down towards the sea.
