• Short Summary

NATIONWIDE ANTI-VIETNAM WAR DEMONSTRATIONS GATHERED MOMENTUM IN A NUMBER OF CAPITAL CITIES OF THE UNITED STATES TODAY (WEDNESDAY) AS STUDENTS AND PROTESTORS ATTENDED MASS RALLIES AS PART OF THE MORATORIUM DAY PROTESTS.

  • Description

CHICAGO STUDENTS READ NAMES OF DEAD; CINCINATTI MARCH; S. VIETNAMESE AMBASSADOR SPEAKING (SOF); BOSTON STUDENTS MARCH; SENATOR KENNEDY SPEAKING (SOF).

TRANSCRIPT: AMBASSADOR: IT IS VERY SAD BECAUSE BY THEN, IT WOULD BE A GREAT INJUSTICE FOR THE VIETNAMESE PEOPLE IN THE SENSE THAT, YOU CAME TO HELP US, WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR THAT, BUT BY THE TIME WE BEGIN TO TAKE OVER THE RESPONSIBILITY, THE WAR RESPONSIBILITY, BY PRECIPITATED ACTIONS, YOU PULL THE RUG UNDER OUR FEET, AND WITHOUT GIVING US THE CHANCE OF STANDING ALONE.

KENNEDY: ULTIMATELY THE FUTURE OF VIETNAM IS IN THE HANDS OF THE VIETNAMESE. THEY HAVE TO MAKE THE SETTLEMENT, NOT US. AND IT IS IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF THEIR PEOPLE, OF THE UNITED STATES AND OF THE WORLD COMMUNITY, THAT THEY DO IT NOW. ACCORDINGLY, I WOULD PROPOSE THAT THE UNITED STATES ANNOUNCE A SCHEDULE OF U.S. TROOPS WITHDRAWALS. AN IRREVOCABLE DECISION TO REMOVE OUR GROUND COMBAT FORCES AS SOON AS POSSIBLE, BUT NO LATER THAN ONE YEAR FROM NOW.

Background: NATIONWIDE ANTI-VIETNAM WAR DEMONSTRATIONS GATHERED MOMENTUM IN A NUMBER OF CAPITAL CITIES OF THE UNITED STATES TODAY (WEDNESDAY) AS STUDENTS AND PROTESTORS ATTENDED MASS RALLIES AS PART OF THE MORATORIUM DAY PROTESTS. MOST OF THE DEMONSTRATIONS WERE ORDERLY, BUT LATE IN THE DAY POLICE WERE FORCED TO TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS AT THE WHITE HOUSE AS THE PROTESTS REACHED A CLIMAX.

PROTEST MEETINGS, CALLS FOR THE WITHDRAWAL OF ALL AMERICAN TROOPS FROM VIETNAM, SIT-INS ON COMMONS AND CAMPUSES, OUTSIDE GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS AND ON THE STEPS OF CONGRESS, WERE HELD TO MARK MORATORIUM DAY, DESIGNED TO DISRUPT "BUSINESS AS USUAL".

AT LOYOLA UNIVERSITY, IN CHICAGO, STUDENTS READ OUT THE NAMES OF THOSE WHO HAD DIED IN VIETNAM, WHILE IN CINCINATTI, ANOTHER GROUP BLEW CEREMONIAL HORNS IN PROTEST.

THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE AMBASSADOR, ADDRESSING A GROUP OF STUDENTS, APPEALED FOR UNDERSTANDING ON BEHALF OF THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE CAUSE, WHILE IN BOSTON, SENATOR EDWARD KENNEY URGED THAT THE UNITED STATES WITHDRAW ALL COMBAT TROOPS FROM VIETNAM WITHIN A YEAR.
