Background: The Junior Chess Championship between the United Kingdom and West Germany opened in warm sunshine at the life-size open-air chessboard in Baden Baden, West Germany, on Friday (19 April).

The two players in the opening game -- Susan Wood from the United Kingdom and Johannes Franke of West Germany -- were only twelve years old and were almost dwarfed by the chess pieces as they walked out on to the black and white flagstones to make their moves.

Johannes Franke won. The two teams went on from Baden Baden to play in towns in the surrounding Black Forest region.
