    NINETY EIGHT CARS INCLUDING EIGHTEEN AUSTRALIAN ENTRIES TODAY LEFT LONDON TO START THE GRUELLING LONDON TO SYDNEY MARATHON IN WHICH THEY'LL ATTEMPT TO COVER 10,000 MILES (16,000 KMS) IN TEN-AND-A-HALF DAYS. THOUSANDS CHEERED AS THE CARS UNDERTOOK THE LONGEST, RICHEST, AND TOUGHEST CAR ENDURANCE TEST OF THE CENTURY.

    FOURTEEN NATIONS ARE REPRESENTED IN THE RACE FOR A GBP10,000 FIRST PRIZE. IT WILL TAKE THE CARS THROUGH FRANCE, ITALY, YUGOSLAVIA, BULGARIA, TURKEY, IRAN, AFGHANISTAN, INDIA AND THEN BY SEA TO FREMANTLE FOR THE FINAL 3,000 LAP ACROSS AUSTRALIA. MUCH OF THE DISTANCE IN OVER ICE-COVERED MOUNTAINS AND DESERT.

    AMONG THE WELLWISHERS FOR THE AUSTRALIAN CONTINGENT WAS AUSTRALIA'S WINNER OF THE MISS WORLD CONTEST, 19-YEAR-OLD PENELOPE PLUMMER OF SYDNEY.

    BEFORE THE RACE STARTED AT LONDON'S CRYSTAL PALACE, SHE TOLD REPORTERS; "I WOULD LOVE TO TAKE PART IN THE RALLY MYSELF AS A PASSENGER BUT NOBODY HAS INVITED ME".

    THE FORD MOTOR COMPANY OF AUSTRALIA'S THREE ENTRIES INCLUDE A FORD FALCON GT DRIVEN BY B. HODGSON AND D. RUTHERFORD. THE OTHER TWO CARS HAVE THREE-DRIVER CREWS. THEY ARE LED BY HARRY FIRTH AND I.M. VAUGHAN. A TOTAL OF 29 FORDS ARE COMPETING.

    NUMBER 31 IS BMC 1800 MD II DRIVEN BY E. GREEN AND J. MURRAY FOR THE BRITISH MOTOR CORPORATION OF AUSTRALIA. SEVENTEEN BMC MADE VEHICLES ARE TACKLING THE MARATHON.

    OF THE 57 BRITISH ENTRIES, THE FOUR-WOMAN CREW IN CREW 33, A VOLVO, HEADED BY MISS E. GADD IS AMONG THE MOST CONFIDENT. ALL CARS ARE LOADED WITH TINNED FOODS AND THOSE WITH WOMEN ABOARD ARE WELL STOCKED WITH COSMETICS TO BRIGHTEN THEMSELVES UP FOR THE OFFICIALS AT VARIOUS CHECKPOINT ROUTES.

    A HOLDEN GRS, DRIVEN BY DAVID McKAY IS ENTERED BY THE TELEGRAPH. SO TOO ARE 41, A MORRIS 1100 DRIVEN BY MISS E. WESTLEY, AND 68, ANOTHER HOLDEN GTS, DRIVEN BY VETERAN AUSTRALIAN RALLY DRIVER DOUG WHITEFORD WITH EDDIE PERKINS AS SECOND DRIVER.

    THREE MORE VOLVOS HAVE BEEN ENTERED BY THE AMOCO AUSTRALIAN COMPANY. THEY'RE CRIVEN FIRST BY P.H. WINKLESS, A.J. WELINSKI AND R.J. HOLDEN.

    THE ONLY ALFA ROMEO CONTESTING THE EVENT IS ENTERED BY ADDISON MOTORS OF AUSTRALIA WITH S.I. McLEOD AS THE FIRST DRIVER SUPPORTED BY C.J. LOCK AND T. THEILER.

    FIFTY-NINE TWO-DRIVER CREWS ORIGINALLY ENTERED FOR THE RACE WITH 37 THREE-DRIVERS AND FOUR 4-DRIVERS.

    THERE WERE ORIGINALLY 100 ENTRIES BUT TOW BRITISH CARS WITHDREW AT THE LAST MINUTE. THOSE WHO MAKE IT TO SYDNEY ON DECEMBER 17 WILL HAVE COVERED FLOODS, ICE, SNOW, MUD AND DESERT SANDS IN THEIR BID FOR THE PRIZEMONEY.

    THE CARS ARE PILED HIGH WITH AIDS TO HELP THE DRIVERS MEET ANY EMERGENCY. OFFICIALS PREDICTED TODAY THAT THREE QUARTERS OF THE CARS WOULD NOT FINISH BUT THE DRIVERS WERE MORE CONFIDENT.

    DAVID LIDDLE, ONE OF DAVID McKAY'S THREE-MAN HOLDEN GTS CREW, SAID: "BETWEEN US WE HAVE DRIVEN OVER THE WHOLE ROUTE AND WE KNOW ALL THE SNAGS. WE SHALL MAKE IT". THEY'RE IN CAR 36.

    FOUR RUSSIAN CREWS ARE ALSO COMPETING FOR THE GBP23,000 PRIZEMONEY OFFERED BY THE SPONSORS, THE SYDNEY DAILY TELEGRAPH AND THE LONDON DAILY EXPRESS.
