  • Description

Hundreds of millions of people last weekend celebrated the return of purged Deputy Premier Teng Hsiao-ping, holding rallies and demonstrations throughout China.

In Peking, Mayor W??? Teh, a politburo member who earlier this year reportedly harboured reservations about Mr. Teng's rehabilitation, led the capital's tributes to the 74-year-old Deputy Premier.

Mr. Wu told a rally of 100,000 in the Workers' Stadium that comrade Teng Hsiao-ping was one of the long-tested leaders of our party, our army and our country.

It was Mr. Wu who appealed for calm on April 5, 1976 when pro-Teng crowds rioted at Tien-am-men Square. He condemned the riots as counter-revolutionary.

In Peking alone, more than two million people had demonstrated in support of the decisions taken by the third plenum of the Central Committee.

On Friday an official communique announced Mr. Teng's return as China's third-ranking leader ad the expulsion of the radical gang of four - Chiang (Madame Mao), Wang Hung-wen, Chang Chun-Chiao and Yao Wen-yuan.

Gigantic demonstrations were held in other cities. In Shanghai, two million people turned out while one quarter of Tientsin's four million inhabitants took part in demonstrations and meetings.
