  • Description

Pro-Communist insurgent pressure continued on Phnompenh yesterday (Friday) as fighting on three fronts around the khmer capital entered the third day.

The most serious threat to Phnompenh came from insurgent forces in the western and northwestern regions where they were apparently trying for a linkup to out the capital under greater pressure.

Government reinforcements of troops and armoured personnel carriers raced to near Kambol on Highway four west of Phnompenh which links the capital with the country's only deepwater port of Kompomg Som. The reinforcements moved in to aid government defenders near the military training centre.

After fighting across rice paddy fields, the government troops were left with several dead and wounded. But they managed to advance slightly and claimed several insurgents dead.

Air strikes assisted government forces commanded by General Deng Layom hold the frontline on Highway five running north-west which connects Phnompenh with the rice-rich province of Battambang. The general expected his troops to later advance following the arrival of reinforcements.

The continued fighting saw no easing of the flow of refugees pouring towards Phnompenh along both major highways.

The closest action to Phnompenh was near Poc???entong international airport where insurgent forces advanced to within two miles (3 kms) of the airport after killing several hundred government troops. Insurgents were now in a position to launch effective rocket and mortar attacks on the airport and sections of the city itself.
