TWO OTHER WORLD RECORD HOLDERS, JOSEF SCHMIDT OF POLAND (TRIPLE JUMP), AND GYULA ZSIVOTZKY OF HUNGARY (HAMMER THROW) ALSO WON THEIR EVENTS.

    GAMMOUDI RAN THE SIX MILES IN 27 MINUTES 23.4 SECONDS, INCLUDING A SUPERS FINAL LAP OF 58.6 SECONDS. BRUCE TULLOH OF BRITAIN WAS SECOND IN 27 MINUTES 23.8 SECOND TO SET A EUROPEAN RECORD, AND LAJOS MECSER OF HUNGARY WAS THIRD IN THE SAME TIME AS TULLOH AND WILL BE CREDITED WITH A EUROPEAN RECORD. GAMMOUDI NEVER LOOKED LIKE LOSING BUT TULLOH ONLY SNATCHED SECOND PLACE FROM MECSER ON THE FINISHING LINE.

    JOSEF SCHMIDT SET A BEST CHAMPIONSHIP PERFORMANCE BY WINNING THE TRIPLE JUMP WITH A DISTANCE OF 52 FEET 5 3/4 INCHES (155.99 METERS). GAILY ZSIVOTZKY RETAINED HIS HAMMER TITLE WITH A THROW OF 216 FEET 8 INCHES (66.04 METERS). TONIGHT' PROGRAMME COMPRISED MAINLY HEATS. THE CHAMPIONSHIPS CONTINUE TOMORROW (SATURDAY).
