  • Description

POLICE USED TEARGAS FOR THE FIRST TIME TONIGHT IN BID TO END AN EIGHT-HOUR BATTLE WITH CATHOLIC DEMONSTRATORS IN WHICH ALMOST 1-HUNDRED PEOPLE WERE INJURED. AS THREE CENTURIES OF PROTESTANT-CATHOLIC TENSTONE EXPLODED INTO VIOLENCE AFTER THE ANNUAL MARCH OF YOUNG PROTESTANT APPRENTICES, TONIGHT PARTS OF DERRY WAS BLAZING.

POLICE, ARMED ONLY WITH BATONS, SHIELDS AND HELMETS, FACED HUNDREDS OF STONE-THROWING DEMONSTRATORS IN THE CATHOLIC BOGSIDE DISTRICT AFTER THE EARLIER MARCH OF PROTESTANT BOY APPRENTICES -- WHICH HAD BEEN EXPECTED TO SPARK OFF TROUBLE -- HAD LOOKED LIKE PASSING WITHOUT INCIDENT.

SOON, POLICE BEGAN TO RETURN THE STONES BEING HURLED AT THEM. A NUMBER OF OFFICERS WERE INJURED DURING THE EXCHANGES, SOME OF THEM SERIOUSLY.

THE BATTLE TOOK A MORE UGLY TURN AS PETROL BOMBS WERE HURLED AT POLICE. ONE POLICEMAN WAS BADLY BURNED WHEN A PETROL BOMB EXPLODED IN FACE, AND OTHERS WERE TRAPPED INSIDE AN ARMOURED CAR, SET ABLAZE BY MORE BOMBS.

TONIGHT, AFTER POLICE HAD USED TEARGAS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN LONDONDERRY -- AND WHAT IS THOUGHT TO BE THE FIRST TIME IN NORTHERN IRELAND -- PARTS OF BOGSIDE WERE BLAZING, AND THE TOLL OF INJURED WAS BEING COUNTED. OF THE 1-HUNDRED OR SO CASUALTIES, 80 WERE POLICEMEN. A NUMBER OF INJURED, BOTH POLICE AND CIVILIANS, HAVE BEEN DETAINED IN HOSPITAL.

LATER IT WAS ANNOUNCED THAT 3-HUNDRED BRITISH TROOPS HAD BEEN OVER TO THE OUTSKIRTS OF LONDONDERRY IN WHAT WAS DESCRIBED BY THE MILITARY COMMAND AS "A PRECAUTIONARY MEASURE".
