  • Description

ALL CANDIDATES OF THE OPPOSITION KENYA PEOPLE'S UNION PARTY (KPU) WERE DISQUALIFIED WHEN THEY PRESENTED THEIR NOMINATIONS AT NAIROBI TOWN HALL YESTERDAY AND ALL THE CANDIDATES OF THE RULING KENYA AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION (KANU) WERE RETURNED UNOPPOSED.

THE DISQUALIFICATIONS WERE SAID TO BE BECAUSE THERE WAS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THEIR NOMINATION PAPERS, BUT SUPPORTERS OF THE FORTY KPU CANDIDATES DEMONSTRATED ANGRILY OUTSIDE THE TOWN HALL.

THE DISTRICT COMMISSIONER FOR NAIROBI, MR. WILLIAM MARTIN, WHO WAS TAKING NOMINATION PAPERS, SAID THAT ALL FORTY KPU CANDIDATES HAD FILLED OUT THEIR PAPERS WRONGLY. MR. MARTIN THEN DECLARED THERE WOULD BE NO ELECTION IN NAIROBI AND THAT THE KANU CANDIDATES WOULD BE RETURNED UNOPPOSED.

LOCAL ELECTIONS ARE DUE TO BE HELD THROUGHOUT KENYA LATER THIS MONTH.

YESTERDAY, POLICE SURROUNDED THE TOWN HALL IN NAIROBI AND KEPT SUPPORTERS WELL AWAY FROM THE BUILDING.

LATER, THE KPU PRESIDENT, MR. OGINGA ODINGA, SAID THAT CANDIDATES OF HIS PARTY HAD BEEN DISQUALIFIED IN OTHER REGIONS FOR SIMILAR REASONS. IT WAS, HE SAID, A BLACK DAY FOR DEMOCRACY IN KENYA.
