    BEIRUT, LEBANON, IN COMMON WITH OTHER CITIES OF THE ARAB WORLD, WAS THE SCENE NOV 1 OF A LARGE-SCALE DEMONSTRATION OF SYMPATHY FOR THE ALGERIAN NATIONALIST REBELS. THE OCCASION WAS THE SEVENTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE ALGERIAN REBELLION.

    APPROXIMATELY FIFTEEN-THOUSAND EXCITED DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED THROUGH THE STREETS. THEIR CHANTS AND BANNERS WERE ANTI-FRENCH. IN THE SQUARE OF THE GRAND SERAJ THEY LISTENED AS SPEAKERS CONDEMNED THE FRENCH HANDLING OF THE SITUATION.

    ARMOURED CARS AND STEEL-HELMETED TROOPS WERE OUT IN FORCE, BUT THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS, AND THE DEMONSTRATION DISPERSED IN A ORDERLY MANNER.
