    THE ZAMBIAN INFORMATION MINISTER, MR. SIKOTA WINA, THIS WEEK SIGNED AN AGREEMENT WITH PEKING'S AMBASSADOR IN LUSAKA, MR. CHIN LI-CHEN, COVERING THE GIFT OF THREE RADIO TRANSMITTERS TO ZAMBIA FROM THE CHINESE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC.

    THE AGREEMENT WAS SIGNED BEHIND CLOSED DOORS AT MR. CHIN'S REQUEST, BUT SOME DETAILS OF THE TRANSACTION WERE REVEALED BY MR. WINA AFTERWARDS IN A BRIEF PRESS STATEMENT.

    HE SAID THE MAIN UNIT, A POWERFUL 200-KILOWATT SHORTWAVE TRANSMITTER, WOULD BE LOCATED SOME 11 MILES (17.7 KM) FROM THE CAPITAL AND THE TWO SMALLER UNITS, EACH OF 50 KW., IN RURAL AREAS BETWEEN THEM THE TRANSMITTERS WOULD ENABLE THE ZAMBIAN BROADCASTING STATION TO BE HEARD THROUGHOUT ZAMBIA AND BEYOND ITS BORDERS. PREVIOUSLY PEOPLE IN SOME RURAL AREAS HAD BEEN UNABLE TO RECEIVE THE SERVICE.

    THE GIFT OF THE TRANSMITTERS IS ONE OUTCOME OF MR. WINA'S OFFICIAL VISIT TO PEKING IN SEPTEMBER. HE DID NOT REVEAL WHEN INSTALLATION WORK WOULD BE COMPLETED.

    WORK IS EXPECTED TO GO AHEAD IN MARCH ON PEKING ???OR VENTURE IN ZAMBIA, THE RAILWAY TO LIRA THE COUNTRY WITH THE TANZANIAN COAST.
