    WEST GERMAN STUDENT LEADER, DANIEL COHN-BENDIT, WAS SENT TO PRISON FOR 3 DAYS AFTER DISTURBANCES IN A FRANKFURT COURTROOM. THE CHAOS BEGAN WHEN THE JUDGE PASSED JAIL SENTENCES ON FOUR GERMAN YOUTHS ACCUSED OF TRYING TO BURN DOWN TWO STORES.

    TWO OF THE ACCUSED YOUTHS ADMITTED PLANTING INCENDIARY DEVICES IN ONE STORE BUT DENIED ANY ARSON ATTEMPT AT THE OTHER. DAMAGE AT THE TWO STORES AMOUNTED TO ALMOST GBP200,000 STERLING. WHEN THE VERDICT WAS ANNOUNCED, SHOUTING BROKE OUT FROM THE PUBLIC GALLERY; ONE STUDENT HAD ALREADY BEEN REPRIMANDED FOR SMOKING. THE ACCUSED TRIED TO LEAVE THE DOCK AND POLICE HAD TO CLEAR THE COURTROOM.

    DANIEL COHN-BENDIT TRIED TO MAKE A SPEECH AND TALK WITH THE DEFENCE LAWYER BUT HE WAS CHARGED WITH CONTEMPT OF COURT. A MONTH AGO, ANOTHER FRANKFURT COURT HAD GIVEN HIM AN EIGHT-MONTH SUSPENDED SENTENCE FOR RIOTING.
