United States Defence Secretary, Harold Brown arrived in Tel Aviv on Tuesday (13 February) on the third stop of his four-nation Middle East tour. The recent developments in Iran dominated talks during Mr. Brown's visit to Israel. Israeli Defence Minister Ezer Weizman said in his welcoming speech at the airport that Mr. Brown's visit came at a time of actual and potential far-reaching changes in the Middle East, and that events in Iran underscore the importance of bringing stability to the region. Israel's Foreign Minister Moshe Dayan, meanwhile expressed his views on peace in the Middle East and the role the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) may have in a peace settlement.

SYNOPSIS: General Dayan addressed the world meeting of Jewish War Veterans in Jerusalem (13 February). His speech is believed to be the first in which am Israeli leader has publicly mentioned the PLO in connection with an overall peace settlement.

During Secretary Brown's visit he learnt that Israel wants to reshape its long term defence purchases from the United States. This had resulted from the Israeli government's concern over developments in Iran and the growing solidarity of Israel's neighbours. In his airport speech, Brown assured Israel of the United States' interest in the stability of the Middle East.
