  • Description

West African and Malagasy trade union representatives gathered in Paris today (Monday) for the start of a seminar to discuss common problems. Delegates from 11 countries will cover a wide variety of topics including labour and social security legislations.

Another important topic for discussion will be the possible establishment of workers' educational centres in Africa.

Countries which have sent delegates include Cameroun, Ivory Coast, Dahomey, Gabon, Upper Volts, Mauritania, Nigeria, Senegal, Chad, Togo and Madagascar. The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions and the International Labour Organisation are also represented.

In a speech of welcome M Pierre Galoni, secretary of the Confederation Force Ouvriere responsible for education said he did not want delegates to become black Europeans.

"Our aim," he said, "is to help you in developing and maintaining your national identities."
In addition to their formal three-week programme of discussions and study groups delegates will also be taken on trips to Verseilles and Fontainbleau.
