  • Description

ROUTE 15 - A 40 MILE (64 KILOMETRE) STRETCH OF ROAD FROM SAIGON TO VUNG TAU, ON THE COAST JUST SOUTH OF THE CAPITAL, HAS BEEN OPENED UP AGAIN. SOUTH VIETNAMESE GOVERNMENT FORCES CLEARED THE AREA OF VIET CONG IN A BATTLE LASTING SEVERAL DAYS. BY THURSDAY, HOWEVER, THE ROAD WAS CLEAR AND THE TASK OF REPAIRING AND REBUILDING BEGAN.

THE BATTLE FOR ROUTE 15 INVOLVED HUNDREDS OF GOVERNMENT TROOPS BACKED UP BY MORE THAN 200 AIRCRAFT INCLUDING THE B-52 STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND BOMBERS. GOVERNMENT LOSSES WERE GIVEN AS 20 KILLED AND SEVERAL INJURED. VIET CONG LOSSES WERE NOT KNOWN. KEEPING MAJOR COMMUNICATIONS ROUTES OPEN HAS BEEN A MAJOR PART OF THE OFFENSIVE AGAINST THE VIET CONG AND ON ROUTE 15 - LIKE THE OTHERS - GOVERNMENT FORCES FOUND WRECKED BRIDGES, CUT TELEGRAPH WIRES, AND DAMAGED DRAINS, PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT DURING THIS TIME OF THE YEAR WITH THE MONSOON RAINS FLOODING THE ROAD.

VILLAGERS ALONG THE ROUTE TO VONG TAU, FEARING THE RETURN OF THE VIET CONG, LEFT THEIR HOMES AND BEGAN TO TREK INTO THE COMPARATIVE SAFETY OF SAIGON, TAKING WHAT THEY COULD ON HAND-CARTS AND BUSES.

FOR THE VIETNAMESE FORCES THE BATTLE MUST GO ON, WITH SEVEN BRIDGES TO REPAIR, DEBRIS AND MINES TO BE CLEARED FROM THE ROAD, AND THE CONSTANT WATCH FOR THE VIET CONG WHO HAVE RETREATED TO THE HILLS.

WHILE AMERICAN HELICOPTERS ATTACK THE VIET CONG POSITIONS IN THE HILLS, SOUTH VIETNAMESE FORCES ARE SEARCHING THE TALL ELEPHANT GRASS AND BUSH FOR THE ENEMY.
