  • Description

Five months ago anti-Americanism was running so high in the northern South Vietnamese city of Hue that, during the Buddhist uprising, the American library and the American consulate were set on fire and burnd down.

The library had been popular with the local teenagers, but it was they who also burned it down. And, the U.S. government decided to let it lie in ruins as a symbol.

But the outlook toward Americans in Hue seems to have changed, and this week, U.S. troops met South Vietnamese youths on the playing fields of Hue in a "friendship tournament."
U.S. Marines of the Third Division and students from Hue participated in the tournament that was sponsored by the U.S. AID Mission in Hue as part of the National Day celebrations marking the third anniversary of the overthrow of the Diem regime.

The Marines were badly outclassed in the soccer game. They tried hard, but it just was not their kind of football, and they lost 4-1 to a Hue high school.

But while the athletics were going on, the war was not far away. From the stadium, machine gun fire could be clearly heard in the distance.

The Marine volley ball team was a strange sight: they arrived wearing gym uniforms and .45 caliber automatic revolvers on their belts.

The Marines pleaded a "shortage of sampans" as their reason for not entering the sampan race. But the Americans plunged into the murky waters of the Perfume River for the swimming race -- and won it.

The day was completed by a military review and some speeches.
