Background: President Leopold Senghor of Senegal opened a major exhibition of the works of Marc Chagall on Thursday (18 March) at the Musee Dynamique in Dakar. The President has a personal interest in the 83-year old Russo-French artist -- he commissioned Chagall to produce illustrations for his book "Elegie des alizes" (Elegy of the winds).

The exhibition, under the joint patronage of the Presidents of Senegal and France, includes more than 200 works, including a wide variety of engravings, prints and lithographs. It closes on 30 April.
