REPORTER: "Captain Hill, can you give us any idea what happened?"

CAPT. HILL: "Well, there's a lot of confusing statements at the moment. We have a committee undergoing the investigations up there at the moment, eleven people from East African Airways, and officials of Civil Aviation, and once we have gone into all the details we can give you a fuller report. At the present moment, all I can say is that, er, the aircraft took off normally. It was lined up to take off and the captain decided to abandon the takeoff, and unfortunately went off the end of the runway, the aircraft broke into three, er, caught fire, and, er, that was the reason for the crash."

Background: Some of the fifty-six survivor of Tuesday's (18th April) jetliner crash in Addis Ababa descended from another East African Airways aircraft at Nairobi Airport yesterday (19th April).

They were led off the aircraft by the Director-General of East African Airways (EAA), Mr. Okot. Survivors included a mother -- Mrs. Ifat Amin -- and her seven-month-old son. Our reporter interviewed EAA Director of Operations, Captain Trevor Hill -- one of the investigation team that arrived in Addis Ababa hours after the crash -- as he walked to the terminal building.

Captain Hill said that he could not make any detailed comment on the cause of the Addis Ababa crash, but some reports say the aircraft appeared to crash off the end of the runway after a tyre had burst on take-off.
