    Some Shi'ites (follower of a major branch of Islam mourn the death of Husain, grandson of Prophet Mohammed, on the 10th of the month of Muharram with bloody self-lacerations during religious processions.

    The anniversary, known as the Day of Ashura, was observed in Karachi, western Pakistan, on Thursday (23 January). It was attended by thousands of Pakistanis.

    Husain, the younger of the two sons of the fourth Caliph Ali, tried to avenge his brother's death at Karbala(Iraq) on October 10 in 680 A.D. He was defeated and killed.

    His death, regarded as martyrdom, has since been marked throughout the Islamic world with deep devotion and sanctity. His sanctuary at Karbala is a place of pilgrimage.

    Shi'ism, with a following of about 40 million, is a main faith in the Iranian plateau, Pakistan and Northern India, especially around Lucknow, the Deccan and Bombay.
