  • Description

THE WORLD CHAMPION RACING DRIVER, DENIS HULME OF NEW ZEALAND, WON THE ITALIAN GRAND PRIX AT MONZA TODAY (SUNDAY) AFTER LEADING MOST OF THE WAY IN HIS MCLAREN-FORD. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME THE 28-YEAR-OLD NEW ZEALANDER HAD WON AN ITALIAN GRAND PRIX.

THERE WAS LITTLE DOUBT ABOUT THE OUTCOME WHEN EVEN MIDWAY THROUGH THE 391 KILOMETRE (243 MILE) AND 68-LAP RACE HULME CONFIDENTIALLY MAINTAINED A LEAD GAINED IN THE 19TH LAP. THE DUEL THAT EXCITED THE CROWD MOST WAS THE BATTLE FOR SECOND PLACE BETWEEN JACKY ICKX OF BELGIUM IN A FERRARI AND JOHNNY SERVOZ-GAVIN OF FRANCE IN A MATRA.

SERVOZ-GAVIN, A LITTLE-KNOWN DRIVER, EDGED OUT ICKX ON THE FINAL LAP FOR SECOND PLACE. BUT THE 23-YEAR-OLD ICKX - COMPETING IN ONLY HIS FIRST YEAR OF GRAND PRIX RACING - MOVED UP TO SECOND PLACE IN THIS YEAR'S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 27 POINTS. BRITISH DRIVER JACKIE STEWART, DRIVING A MATRA-FORD, IS THIRD WITH 26 POINTS AND HULME FOURTH WITH 24.
