  • Description

AN EXPLORER SATELLITE FITTED TO A THREE-STAGE DELTA ROCKET WAS LAUNCHED FROM CAPE CANAVERAL ON THE NIGHT OF 2 APRIL.

THE SATELLITE IS A 410-POUND UNIT ENCASED IN A STAINLESS STEEL SHELL, WITH A MISSION TO COLLECT INFORMATION ABOUT THE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE. IT IS EXPECTED TO PROVIDE IN ONE TRIP MORE DATA THAN ALL THE KNOWLEDGE GAINED THROUGH THE CENTURIES.

THE SATELLITE WENT INTO AN OVAL ORBIT 150 TO 570 MILES HIGH. GROUND STATIONS HAVE TUNED ON TO THE ROCKET WAITING TO TAKE FIVE-MINUTE BURSTS OF INFORMATION DURING THE EXPLORER'S ANTICIPATED 60-90-DAY LIFETIME. THE SCHEDULE PLANS TO ACTIVATE THE SATELLITE 10 TO 20 TIMES EACH DAY.
