  • Description

JACK BRABHAM OF AUSTRALIA TOOK ANOTHER STEP TOWARDS THE 1966 MOTOR RACING DRIVERS' CHAMPIONSHIP TODAY (SUNDAY) WHEN HE WON THE DUTCH GRAND PRIX.

BRABHAM, A FORMER WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, HAD HIS THIRD SUCCESSIVE WIN ON THE CIRCUIT AT ZANDVOORT. HE RECENTLY WON THE FRENCH AND BRITISH GRAND PRIX. DRIVING A REPCO-BRABHAM, HE BEAT ANOTHER FORMER WORLD CHAMPION, GRAHAM HILL OF BRITAIN, INTO SECOND PLACE. THE REIGNING CHAMPION, JIM CLARK OF BRITAIN, CAME IN THIRD.

TODAY'S VICTORY PUT BRABHAM'S LEAD IN THE CHAMPIONSHIP TABLES A SIXTEEN POINTS, WITH HILL MOVING INTO SECOND PLACE. THE DUTCH EVENT IS THE FIFTH RACE OF THE TEN RACE WORLD SERIES.

CLARK, WHO WON THE DUTCH GRAND PRIX LAST YEAR, WAS UNLUCKY TODAY. HE LED AT THE HALF-WAY STAGE, BUT HAT TO RETURN TO THE PITS IN THE SEVENTY-FIFTH LAP WITH AN OVERHEAD ENGINE.

UP TO THEN IT HAD BEEN A CLOSE FIGHT BETWEEN CLARK AND BRABHAM. THE CHAMPION DID RETURN DID RETURN TO THE RACE, BUT HE'D LOST ENOUGH TIME TO CONCEDE TO THE AUSTRALIAN. AND A SECOND PITS STOP IN THE EIGHTY-FIRST LAP COST HIM THE SECOND PLACE.

A CROWD OF ALMOST EIGHTY THOUSAND SAW BRABHAM TAKE THE LEAD AT THE START OF THE NINETY-LAP RACE OVER THE TWO AND A HALF MILE (4 KILOMETRE) CIRCUIT. CLARK OVERTOOK HIM ON THE TWENTY-SIXTH LAP, AND WAS EDGING AHEAD WHEN HIS ENGINE OVERHEATED.
