  • Description

Dutch Supreme Commander, Admiral Proepper arrived at Sentani Airport, Jan 13, for an 18-day tour of inspection in Dutch West New Guinea - the territory whose sovereignty is claimed by Indonesia.

Accompanying Admiral Proepper was Rear-Admiral Platerink, who is Navy Commander for Dutch New Guinea. He travelled in civilian clothes. They were greeted by Governor Platteel, also wearing civilian clothes.

In a statement, Admiral Proepper said Dutch Forces there had no aggressive intentions towards Indonesia and denied they had acted provocatively. He said the Forces were there to protect the territory and make possible a continuous and peaceful development of the country. He added it was Holland's duty to protect the Papuan people.

Papuans went to the polls for the first time this month in elections which were part of a Dutch programme to speed up measures preparing Papuans for self-determination.

Later this year, Defence Minister Visser plans to visit Dutch New Guinea. He was to have travelled with Admiral Proepper but cancelled his visit this time because of the Dutch Cabinet crisis, now resolved.
