For many people who come to the USSR their visit in our country begins from Odessa, a large pot city on the Black Sea. The people of Odessa love their city and call it "Lovely Odessa". Hardly anyone would say to the contrary. Especially after seeing the wonderful architectural monuments, such as the Potemkin Stairs, which had been built over 130 years ago and consist of 192 steps. Or the building of the State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre, one of the most beautiful building in Europe. There are many heroic pages in the history of this City. It was here that in 1905 the sailors of the "Potemkin" Battleship first raised the red flag of a revolutionary rising. It was here that Soviet soldiers and sailors stood to their last in the Great Patriotic War. Odessa received the honorary title of Hero-City. Odessa is a large industrial centre. The largest port on the Black Sea processes thousands of tons of cargo daily. The moorage is several kilometres long. The port of Odessa is equipped with first-class technique. States-partners of the USSR in the CMEA took part in equipping the port. The number of passenger and cargo lines increases each year. New agreements are signed with foreign countries about united-shipments. Ten port cities of the world are twin-cities of Odessa. Their relations are developing in the framework of the World Federation of Twin Cities. Ships from all continents come into the port. There are festive days at the port when Soviet sailors return home after long voyages. Statistics show that there is a sailor in every third Odessa family
